Shimon Peres

שמעון פרסPark Peres is named after Shimon Peres (OBM), one of the founding fathers of the State of Israel, the one who gave Israel its security deterrence and defense capabilities during the years of its establishment, the person who headed the establishment of the IDF and its arming process, founded the reactor in Dimona, the Soreq Nuclear Research Center and the Defense Industries, labored tirelessly for decades to promote the peace relations within the State of Israel and between Israel and its neighbors and led the transformation of Israel into a global technology and innovation power. Shimon Peres (OBM) – a statesman, the ninth President of the State of Israel and its Prime Minister, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, a man of action and vision.

Peres was one of those rare politicians who are called in their adulthood “Statesmen”. And indeed, he was a man of the State who labored for it. In his own unique way, he left an enormous lasting impression on it. One of his most important principles, a principle he kept repeating on every occasion during the last years of his public activity, was “Young people, go into politics”. It was very important for Peres that young people won’t become estranged from politics and that the public won’t grasp its narrow unflattering definition as a world dominated by intrigues and power. He preached the almost philosophical value of politics as a place situated above society, which attracts people and ideas that are intended to fill with content, framework and values the abstract idea of living together within a single framework, the State.

In this manner and through his widespread activities within the field of defense and security, in his diverse roles in the Governments of Israel and the Knesset as well as in his non-parliamentary activities and as the President of the State of Israel for promoting worldwide peace, Shimon Peres became one of the most prominent and outstanding statesmen of our times, in Israel and in the entire world, and he came to be one of the most prominent Israeli figures in history.

Shimon Peres (OBM) established and managed The Peres Center for Peace.
